Middle
School
Ages 13 - 15 years (Seventh & Eighth
Grade).......................
Active, self-directed, non-competitive learning continues at the Middle
School Program level, where classes span two age/grade levels. The middle
school program is open to grades 7-8. It is designed to integrate current
research in adolescent development, the trends and issues in education, and
the Montessori philosophy. The mission of the program is to provide
opportunities for adolescents to be self-confident and gain self-knowledge,
to belong to a community, to learn to be adaptable, to be academically
competent and challenged, and to create a vision for their personal future.
A more
structured academic curriculum covers a wide range of interests and
abilities up through the oldest and most accelerated students in the class.
Assessment and testing are “built into” daily lessons. Standardized testing
is introduced in 3rd grade. To reach their full potential, students gain an
integrated knowledge of science and technology, history, the arts,
mathematics, literature, economics, politics, and world culture. They also
acquire sound skills in writing and research, critical reading and thinking,
and effective work habits. Not least of all, children learn to be
responsible, respectful members of their classroom families and to celebrate
both individual and group accomplishment. |
